Ahmet Gürata IMITATION OF LIFE

Intercultural reception of films involves many different stages from translation to remakes. Taking Turkey as an example, Imitation of Life analyse the historical, social and economic conditions of circulation, reception and reinterpretation of international films. The first part of the book offers a historical analysis of particular exhibition practices and consequent reception processes from 1910s to 1950s. The next part focus on the phenomenon of the remake with a specific focus on intertextuality and hybridity. The most significant aspect of the remade films is their negotiation of cultural and moral values. The book suggests, asserting a localised version of modernity as opposed to the universal model of Westernisation, remakes can easily be considered within the framework of alternative modernities. In Imitation of Life, Ahmet Gürata proposes an alternative approach to national cinema, challenging the divisions between national and international, as well as major and minor works. Emphasizing cross-cultural interactions between different cinemas, he offers a new model that emphasizes images of diversity in Turkish cinema.
